Top Recovery Tips from Oral Surgeons

Any type of surgery can be traumatic to your body, including oral surgery and tooth extractions. After your surgery, recovery should be your main focus. Your oral surgeon will give you a detailed list of instructions concerning the periods before and after your procedure; these are designed to prevent trauma to the surgery site, reduce your risk of infection and help you avoid unnecessary discomfort during your recovery. To ensure the best chances of a fast, smooth and successful recovery, follow your dental surgeon’s advice carefully. The following general tips may also be helpful.

Bleeding Following a Tooth Extraction

You may experience some bleeding after a tooth extraction for up to 24 hours. Most dental surgeons will give specific instructions for using gauze to control bleeding. Biting on a moist black-tea bag may help reduce excessive bleeding and increase clotting. If bleeding continues, contact your oral surgeon.

Facial or Gum Swelling

Tissue swelling after surgery is normal. Many dental surgeons recommend elevating the head with pillows to reduce swelling. For the first 24 hours after your surgery, you may also use an ice pack. You may also experience some facial muscle stiffness and bruising during this period. Most symptoms are gone in seven to 10 days. Call your oral surgeon if they persist.

Post-Surgical Medications

Oral surgeons provide prescription pain medicine to manage discomfort during recovery. Follow all dosage instructions carefully. If you are given antibiotics, be sure to take the entire prescription, even if your symptoms go away sooner.

Rest and Activity

After your surgery, plan to take it easy for at least two days. With your dental surgeon’s permission, you may resume normal activities within 48 hours.

Dental Hygiene After Surgery

Avoid vigorous spitting and rinsing for 24 hours. If you can open your mouth wide enough, brush and floss gently, and rinse with plain water. After the first 24 hours, you may switch to a saline or saltwater rinse to help keep the incision clean.

Smoking and Tobacco Use

Oral surgeons recommend not smoking for at least one full day after a procedure. Smoking can delay healing, and contribute to a painful complication called dry socket. Do not use chewing tobacco until the surgery site is fully healed.
